View from Paritutu Rock

vfa1The previous time we headed to New Plymouth, I made it half way up Paritutu Rock. Equipped with jandals (flip flops to some) and poor choice of climbing clothes I didn’t feel safe enough to navigate the raw rock and chain rope up to the summit. This time, aside from some fatigue of getting to the rock from the other end of the city, I ventured to the top and too some shots.

As well as my Sony, I had an old disposable camera that had been sitting in a drawer. I used that to document my travels along the coastal walkway – when I get that developed I will share some scans.

Port Taranaki Power Station and Sugar Loaf Island

View from Paritutu SummitOne of my favorite shots from last weeks holiday in New Plymouth is from Paritutu – a tall headland point to one side of the main township. Looking down, under a falling sun I captured this image of the old power station, and offshore island.

The power station, a natural gas/fuel oil station was opened in 1974, and decommissioned in 2008. Asbestos discovery was noted as one of the reasons for the closure (NZ has widely banned any new use of asbestos for several years now, and its often very costly to deal with in old homes etc).

Off shore was see Sugarloaf island. The remainder volcanic vent piece from an estimated 1.7 Million years ago. Now part of a protected Marine area.

On the Hill

On the Hill

A lazy view relaxing in the long grass and sun from Mt Victoria on Aucklands North Shore. From here (if you look the right way) you can see the CBD, the Harbour Bridge and out towards West Auckland. A quick scamper over the crest and the rest of the North Shore, and local islands off it can be viewed into the distance.

Shot on the Ricoh GRD IV, using the bleach bipass mode. In Gimp I resized and added the rounded corners, otherwise as is from the camera.

Its been a wildly various week of weather for us here in Auckland – a beautiful hot sun today, heavy rain and tornadoes only two days ago. Here is hoping we are coming into some stable summer months.

Christmas is well and truly near. Shopping wise I adopt the ‘not time yet’ attitude, but heading into the shops today, I can see many are already stocking up.

The sun is still shining, so I will log off here and get back out into it!

Mt Eden and the City

Finishing work in town this evening, with traffic on the motorways already banked up, I took a quick trip to see the view from Mt Eden. As I may have mentioned before, Auckland is surrounded by volcanic cones (around 50 volcanic cones) – Mt Eden’s being in the foreground of this image. Although popular for children to go rolling down several decades ago, Mt Eden has both archaeological importance and local Maori sacredness brought to the public’s awareness in recent years and the crater itself is technically a no-go zone. Behind the crater we can see a view of Aucklands CBD, and behind that, the North Shore and western suburbs.

Editing wise, using Gimp, I added a vignette, adjusted the levels and applied a ‘film grain’ filter.

Hilltop View

Another clear blue sky marked the end of the working week today. I took a stroll up one of the local hills to take in the ‘golden hour’ as the sun dropped low on the horizon. Whilst I liked each of the three images alone, I decided to combine them to show the progressive journey to the final shot, peeking through the harakeke (flax) towards Rangitoto on the other side of the harbor.
