Sundown Wednesday

Shot on my Sony Nex with the Sigma 30mm lens, Sundown Wednesday is a view from the Bayswater Marina to the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

I am coming to the slow acceptance that Christmas is just around the corner now. One of my work colleagues has put their tree up, some of the local Christmas Tree sales spots are advertising, and the Malls have their Christmas shops opening. This weekend we have the Santa Parade in our local village (as do a number of others). That also means its nearly holiday time!

Image wise, in Gimp I resized and added the black framing, nothing else was edited.

Oi!

I’m pretty sure ‘Oi!’ was the seagulls statement at me as I snapped him in this photo the other day in town.

Summer is sure on its way in Auckland these last few days – of course having faulty air-conditioning at work, taking us to 28+ degrees helps, as does running around in level 2’s in the evening.

Image wise, snapped on the Sony Nex and edited in Gimp. Editing consisted of cropping to square format, desaturating all but the red, and bumping up the sharpening slightly.

As Mondays often are, its been a long day, so I will aim for more tomorrow.

Green and Pink

Last week I managed to get some extra shooting time in, which was great, but possibly a signal that I would not be able to do so much this week. Misfortune would have it that the day after my half marathon I stood on a nasty big rusty nail, which has left me limping around home on meds. My cameras are looking at me, but I cant get much further than the front door… the weather is amazing also!

Not much of a story to tell for today’s image, shot on the Nex 5N. Close up of some bright pink flowers with the kit lens.

Catch you you tomorrow!

It’s Emily Again

Over the weekend we were visited by our friend Emily, for an impromptu BBQ. Whilst waiting for the food to cook I took a few snaps with my 5N and the Sigma lens.

Although the focus wasn’t crystal sharp on today chosen image, it was one of my favourites simply for the day-dreamy though in her eyes/face.

Shot at 400iso, under a old light, I played with the levels a little to bring up the whites and create a bit more of a softness to the skin tone.

Thanks again for the pose Emily!

Here and Gone

Another two shot image today. I took ‘Here and Gone’ down at the Onepoto Domain on the North Shore. A great mid sized park with tracks to walk and cycle, a playground for kids and a like where hobby radio control sail boats are often raced. Its also packed with ducks, gulls, pukeko and pigeons.

Heading down with my Nex, I was aiming to look for some bird-life to get with the 210mm zoom. I did capture a number, but chose the above sequence for the simple there then gone story it tells.

In Gimp I simply put the two images onto one canvas and resized. Nice and simple for a Monday!

The Landing

Its funny how animals have learnt that what they do, and aspects of human behaviour equates to reward. Frequently when visiting the beach or lakes, enjoying some lunch or dinner, the ducks, swans, pukeko and seagulls also know its lunch or dinner time. If they didn’t come flying and running, its unlikely we would end up throwing them 10% of our fish and chips.

They have yet to learn that someone who comes walking and sitting in aforementioned places with a camera does not necessarily come with reward. I took a stroll around part of Lake Pupuke, Sony Nex in hand (not food). At each point ducks, geese and swans would hurriedly come quacking on foot, through the water and air, only to be disappointed with a rewarding click of the camera. Not that their expressions change much, but some made me feel lousy that I didn’t bring them food!

Today’s image, just before sunset was of one such upset duck who flew from the other side of the park hoping to get some supper before bedtime. In Gimp I added a lomo filter which framed the incoming flyer well.

The Door

The weekend has felt a long time coming this week. Luckily, its a long weekend in New Zealand with Labour Day. I had time for a quick walk before dinner after work today, and had a look around the back streets of Takapuna. Armed with my Nex and the kit lens, I took this simple image of a door and stairwell coming out of the back of a building.

In post processing I converted to Black and White, pushed the contrast and added some vignette. What’s behind that door?
Perhaps its the weekend!

Sheep 2

Even though the days are slowly getting longer, of late it seem like I have less and less time free to go out and shoot some photos…I’ll have to do something about that, but for now, here is an image I took several weeks back on the Sony Nex 5N at Cornwall Park.

Post processing wise, I played with the levels a little and added a slight colour tone to the image.

Sheep are funny animals. The have the ability to be a bit intimidating the way they stare at you breathing heavily. In reality I expect most the time they would think the opposite, breathing heavily, panicking what that human is going to do next. For anyone looking for a ‘sheep movie’ try the New Zealand filmed Black Sheep.

Fingers crossed I can get some images tomorrow!

The Colour Lavender

Dropping in to see some family after work today, I caught a quick snap of the lavender in full bloom.

Using Gimp in post processing, I desaturated several colours, slightly adjusted levels and added a little sharpness.

Sort and sweet for today!

Wall of Colour

As mentioned the over the weekend during one of my walks, I came across an old abandoned/condemned area which had had a lot of erosion and landslips. Some of the track had gone with it, but you could make out an alternate track that ‘adventure walkers’ had made, and I followed.

Part of the fenced off area included a large reinforced concrete area, where today’s photo came from. Although there is a difference in my head between street art and graffiti, one thing for certain is its full of bright attracting colour. If it had not been for the colour, this area would have blended in with the bush.

Shot on my Sony Nex 5N and the Sigma 2.8/30 lens. In Gimp I added black boarder and resized for the net.
