The Missed Shot

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe missed shot. So often its because one has not brought their camera with them. Other times, its the fumbling around getting ones camera at the ready just as something happens. Today was a bit of both. Arriving home, it was a welcoming sight to see a couple of goldfinch pecking away at my cropped wildflowers. I had noticed one in the morning, so now back with its mate, I assumed they might be feeding for a while. Casually walking back to my camera cabinet, choosing my longest zoom (300mm on the Olympus – 600mm for 35mm format). Back to the window, slowly so as not to scare the finches I crept. ‘this will be a nice photo for the day I said to myself’ (in my head, not out aloud). Alas…the birds had grabbed what they came for and left.

So for today “The Missed Shot” – or “Flowers on the Fence-line”

Upper Harbour View

Upper Harbour ViewAnother beautiful Saturday morning. I went for a quick stroll around Auckland’s Upper Harbour area before starting on chores. Battery on 4% (poor planning there) I still managed to get plenty of shots.

We are Mankind. We came from planet Earth, and we built this base, called Alpha, to learn more about space. But human error blasted this Moon out of the Earth’s orbit. And so, we have traveled the Universe searching for a place to live. Now, we can no longer live here, and we go to face an uncertain future on the planet that has nearly destroyed us. You, whoever you are, who find this empty vessel of Alpha, come and seek us out, if we still exist. Come and teach us all you know. Because, we have learned many things, but most of all, we have learned we still have much to learn.

Golden Sun Rises

Golden Sunrise
An early start to get supplies for the week took me past Auckland’s Lake Pupuke. Standing on the eastern side, the sun was just entering the sky for another glorious day.
To take his chorus line, I found Lou Reed’s lyrics floating in my mind as I walked along the lake side:
Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spend it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on

I have not gone looking for any statistics, but was thinking today that we have more prime/fixed lens photos being made than ever before in history.

Back in the early days of photography, everything was prime lens. Early 1900’s saw the zoom gradually introduce itself, and work into mainstream from the 50’s to current day. In general (but not always) the prime lens has offered superior optics and faster lenses – yet the usability and all-rounded-ness of the zoom makes it the amazing all in one package!

Yet, with the massive growth of smartphones this last decade, we have seen again the popularised mass use of the prime lens. I don’t think this is so much to do with supplying a quality prime lens matched to the sensor as it is technology limitations. Likely its only time until this changes and the zoom again regains the crown, but for now the prime is here, and possibly making individuals better photographers whilst its at it!

I say better because a fixed focal length makes you think. You need to move with you feet for the better angle or closer/wider shot. That makes you (ok, it ‘could’ make one) think more about your framing of composition.

I could go on, but perhaps another day…
