Auckland Round The Bays 2014
Today marked Auckland’s Round The Bays fun run – NZ’s biggest participant run. Unfortunately a recent bug left me not feeling up to competing this year (I think my first non-participate in 7 years!). However, I went down to watch the start all the same.
First off, just before the gun is the wheelchair participants. Then at the sound of the gun about 35,000 people take off for the 8.4km waterfront journey.
Below is a series of images shot to show the ‘mob’ of people approaching like the tide coming in. I then wandered down, took some closer shots, and then again went up the hill to look again. The final shot, with people still just crossing the start line was a good 15-20min after the start gun!
Planning and Planning
One of my less than visually stunning images for this Friday. Thos who have followed me long enough might recall a photo titled ‘The Proposal‘. Its all getting mighty close now here in the household, so close that table maps and lists of names are falling into order. A wonderful combination of excitedness and ‘so much to do’ is floating around. One thing not on todays list was heading out to take some images, so here we are, inside and mapping it out.
Have a nice Friday!
Frankenstein’s Ukulele
‘Just for fun’ I threw together a home designed and built Ukulele over the last few weekends. Influenced by cigar box uke’s and guitars, I took their essential design, but worked from scratch.
The straight angled body and sound holes give it enough lack of beauty that its been named Frankenstein’s Ukulele – although to be fair to old Frank, I didnt reuse any old body parts…perhaps its actually Pinocchio’s – but his would be more crafted and carved.
How does it play? Well, with me behind the strings, it doesn’t play any worse than anything else. Thats to say one would recoil at my playing before the sound quality. Its not bad. Strings are just fresh on today, so still bedding in. Tone is nice, but not as long standing as my purchased units.
Perhaps its Frankenstein 1.0
Foreign World
We are Mankind. We came from planet Earth, and we built this base, called Alpha, to learn more about space. But human error blasted this Moon out of the Earth’s orbit. And so, we have traveled the Universe searching for a place to live. Now, we can no longer live here, and we go to face an uncertain future on the planet that has nearly destroyed us. You, whoever you are, who find this empty vessel of Alpha, come and seek us out, if we still exist. Come and teach us all you know. Because, we have learned many things, but most of all, we have learned we still have much to learn.

Golden Sun Rises

An early start to get supplies for the week took me past Auckland’s Lake Pupuke. Standing on the eastern side, the sun was just entering the sky for another glorious day.
To take his chorus line, I found Lou Reed’s lyrics floating in my mind as I walked along the lake side:
Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spend it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on
You just keep me hanging on
More tomorrow
